A cotton swab, generic name: Q-tip, generally used to clean ears, though medical experts are saying that it has no medical benefits and is harmful to the ear!
A Cotton Swab (generally called a Q-tip)

If you can read this blog post it means that you have a device, or access to a device. Which in turn means that you have sufficient money and can afford the modern luxuries to some extent. Things such as a tv, cell phone, car, house and medical care are well known to you. Which also means you have used a cotton swab sometime in your life. They are also called Q-tips, but it's a brand name, while 'cotton swabs' is the generic term.

In 1923, upon observing his wife attach wads of cotton to toothpicks to clean their infant's ears Leo Gerstenzang conceived the idea of manufacturing a ready-to-use cotton swab. He later founded the Q-tips® Company.[1]

...which tells us that they were invented to clean the founder's infant's ears and when he produced them commercially they were utilized to clean people's ears.

But Healthline, a provider of health information, says "...inserting a cotton swab into your ear can cause a variety of problems. These can include:

  1. Earwax Impaction

  2. Injury

  3. Infections, &

  4. Foreign body in the ear" [2]

Now that's a huge contradiction. Considering the design, cotton swabs are suitable for cleaning the ears since:

  1. They fit in the ears

  2. Are sufficiently long to go inside

  3. Don't break or bend normally

  4. The tiny cotton wads adhere to earwax and other materials in the ear and can remove them, &

  5. The wads don't irritate the ear canal.

Going by the origin and the design, it's logical that Q-tips should be used for ear-cleaning. I'm not suggesting that people do that, just stating things from a logical perspective. Gonna go with medical experts on this one.

Q-tips are a rare case where Design & User Experience are in conflict with Medical science & Safety!

This is an open-ended dilemma. I don't have the answer. Still use the cotton swab stick to relieve the itch when I get it though. 🤭

But not all is lost for the company though, as tech experts are advising people to clean computer keyboards using Q-tips! 🤣

This is my opinion. Consult a doctor for medical advice.
